GETTING STARTED
There are 4 call signs you need to put in your D-Star radio. Also you should be in DV Mode (digital voice). MYCALL : (Put your own call in) RPT1 : K5NEM(space)(space)C Repeater call, then 2 spaces, then C (C in 8th position) RPT2 : K5NEM (space)(space)G (G in 8th position) URCALL : CQCQCQ (see below for 880H and 80AD setup notes)
You will also need to program the repeater frequency of 147.340 MHz and offset of Plus (+) .600 MHz. This should get you on the air for local repeater use. To use the gateway to access the D-Star Network you will need to register, only if you have never registered before on any D-Star gateway. Please only register one time for the D-Star network. Once registered you are good to access any repeater gateway, anywhere.
Here are a few good D-Star information sites: HAMCOM Presentation on D-Star (PDF)
General D-Star Information An important thing to remember when using the D-Star digital mode, is to "drag you feet" (leave several seconds) between conversations. Also do not quick key. It works best to key-up, wait a second or two before you start talking. If you don't there is a good chance you will be garbled (called R2D2), or just won't make it at all. There is a digital header sent as you key that has to complete before you can talk.
Icom IC-880H Setup Tips - Also probably works for the IC-80AD We had some trouble getting the 880H setup for gateway access to work properly. R1 would not accept the G in the 8th position. Using the steps below it works OK. If you have similar trouble, try this setup. This is for the K5NEM--C repeater.
Be sure GW SET is Auto under DV SET menu. You need to be in DR mode (DR displayed on screen) When entering a new R List do the following R NAME - K5NEM Call Signs UR - U1 Enter DRCQCQ (Do not use default UR CQCQCQ) [manualy add DRCQCQ into UR1] R1 K5NEM C R2 K5NEM G ( This is automatic if AUTO G option is on ) MY Your Call Sign / 880H - (or 80AD) K5NEM C repeater should be selected and displayed on screen. Freq - 147.340 Offset + 0.600 Add W (Yes) Long press (1 sec) UR button. By short pressing BAND button several times select GRP UR (probably only briefly shows, then goes back to CQCQCQ) Short press UR to exit. If you long press CS (call sign) button now you should be able to scan through and see this: UR DRCQCQ (Do not use UR CQCQCQ) R1 K5NEM C R2 K5NEM G ( This is automatic if AUTO G option is on ) MY Your Call Sign / 880H FREQ 147.340 Some of these steps may be out of order
